Four companies dominate the road bike market in the United States. They are Bianchi, Jamis, Trek and Specialized.
Bianchi was started in 1885 by Edoardo Bianchi. In 1981, the company based in Milan, Italy, opened its USA 
division. The USA division is based in Hayward, California. The company is overseen by Rod Jewett. Most of today’s bicycles for this company are built in Taiwan. It is the oldest bicycle making company still in existence. The company was the first to make bicycles with two tires the same size. They are also the first to use rubber tires.
Jamis was started in 1937 by Mr. G. Joannou. The company is operated today by his daughter, Carine Joannou. The company is based in Northvale, New Jersey. The company sells bicycles that are built in China and Taiwan. The company is the oldest bicycle company in the United States under original family ownership. The company sells bicycles in 52 countries around the world.
Trek bicycles started in December, 1975, by Richard “Dick” Burke and Bevel Hogg. They received financing from Roth Corporation, who was a Milwaukee, Minnesota appliance distributor. Today, the company is owned by Intrepid Corporation. The company is headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, under the leadership of John Burke. In Germany, the bikes are sold under the brand Diamant Bikes, while in Switzerland the bikes are sold under the brand Villiger.
Specialized Bicycle Components was started in 1974 by Mike Sinyard. It is headquartered in Morgan Hill, California. The company is still under the control of Mike Sinyard, who sold his vehicle to make a biking trip across England. While on the trip, Mr. Sinyard discovered many things about biking.
